You’re Beautiful, Spain

Spain, what isn’t there to like about it… Warm weather, happy people. The whole country pretty much shuts down in the afternoon for a ‘siesta’ (nap). Be prepared.

We trained into Spain using our Eurail Pass (Europe train pass), and the ride in was absolutely gorgeous. The colors and variety in landscape was stunning. Of all the wonderful places you can go in Spain, we chose to go to Barcelona and Madrid. First stop, Barcelona.

barcelona10.jpg
View from train

Where to stay? I honestly can’t remember the name of where we stayed…but we took the metro to get there and it was right by Cathedral de Santa Eulalia. Here are some ideas for hostels to stay at. You’ll want to stay near the city center…it’ll make it easy for you to walk/train everywhere.

barcelona2.jpg
Cathedral de Santa Eulalia

Things you cannot miss in Barcelona:

  • La Sagrada Familia – A massive, gorgeous church designed by Antoni Gaudi (you’ll be hearing more of him). This church began construction in 1882, and is STILL NOT FINISHED. Gaudi passed away in 1926, and the church is anticipated to be finished by 2026. Absolutely mind blowing. So, when you go there, you’ll see cranes and scaffolding surrounding the building. It kind of sucks for pictures and all that, so go inside to make it worth it! Buy your tickets ahead of time.

  • Park Guell – Mr. Antoni Guadi does it again with this park. You will fall in love…I will let the pictures speak for themselves. Hike up to the top – the view is worth it! & buy your tickets online ahead of time.

Park Guell
  • Barceloneta Beach – Take the train to get there…then follow the crowd. Be prepared to see boobs, or naked people in general. Join in, if you’d like. Also, the water is freezing!!!
  • El Born – Born is an area/neighborhood in Barcelona that is filled with narrow windy streets that are cute and quaint. There are also SO many great restaurants there. If you’re looking for authenticity..go there.
  • FOOD.  Paella, tapas, and sangria. Eat/drink all of it, and as much as you can. When you sit at a restaurant, the servers will let you sit there as long as you’d like without bothering you (unlike America). You basically have to flag them down to get your check.

Things I missed/other things to do:

  • Santa Maria del Mar  – Another massive church resembling to La Sagrada Familia. They are all about their gothic architecture in Barcelona.
  • Anella Olimpica – Home of the 1992 Olympics.
  • Montjuic – This is the name of a castle, but also refers to the park that the castle is in. This park is HUGE, and I’m sad I missed it. There is a cable car that takes you up to the top of the hill – I highly suggest doing this! (heard about it from fellow travelers)

Be careful for pickpocketers in Barcelona, and every where else. I witnessed someone getting their wallet stolen on the train…don’t let that happen to you. NEVER keep important belongings in the outside zipper of your bag or backpack. People will work together, i.e. someone will play the guitar to distract everyone while another person pickpockets you. Just be aware!

Next stop…Madrid and it’s gorgeous white architecture.

madrid6.jpg
Madrid!

Sooo we really only had about a day and a half in Madrid, and almost one whole day was consumed with dealing with our canceled flight to our next destination, Morocco. It didn’t really get canceled, but Ryanair claimed the Barcelona baggage workers were on strike, so we wouldn’t be able to check a bag. Long story short, Ryanair stretched the truth…and really ONLY THEIR WORKERS were on strike because their pay was getting cut 30%. DON’T FLY RYAINAIR. Yes it’s cheap, but everyone I’ve talked to always has some kind of problem.

We ended up having to buy another flight, thank god for travel insurance!!!

We did make it around to a few places:

  • El Retiro Park – It’s massive, it’s green, it’s gorgeous. There is a large pond in the park that you can rent row boats on…which we did, and sun bathed =). The monument you see along the pond is awesome and called Monumento Alfonso XII.

madrid2madrid3

  • Calle Baja St. for dinner – There are tons of cool restaurants on this street, definitely check it out!
  • Puerta del Sol – Our hotel was two blocks off the main square. I think this is considered one of the busiest areas in Madrid!
  • There is lots and lots of shopping, indulge if you please. And again, eat lots of tapas and drink even more sangria!

Other things YOU shouldn’t miss:

I plan to return to Spain, and soon. I feel like I didn’t get to experience nearly enough.  Thanks for reading and enjoy!

Wake Up!

The book read: Waking Up by Sam Harris

This is a book about training yourself to be mindful, and what mindfulness is. It teaches you to take away the illusion of the self, and feel as if you are one with everything. Meditation is the method used to reach these goals.

It’s a good read to find tips on how to better yourself and train your mind to think how you would like it to, rather than letting it control you. Sam Harris is anti-religious and uses the world “spirituality” in its place, but with a different meaning. Mr. Harris is very controversial, but has a strong following, and if you are into meditation and mindfulness, I highly recommend this book.

My thoughts:

  • Cutting through the illusion of the self is the definition of spirituality in this book.
  • It is possible to be at ease in the world for no reason, if only a few moments at a time, and that such ease is synonymous with transcending the apparent boundaries of the self.
  • “I no longer felt separate from the scene, peering out at the world from behind my eyes. Only the world remained.”
  • The only thing relevant to the question of personal identity is psychological continuity from one moment to the next.
  • It may not be coincidental that you use phrases like ‘self conscious’ when you really mean that you are conscious of others being conscious of you.
  • Constantly remind yourself what you are grateful for!
  • Many people on earth at this moment can’t even imagine the freedom that you currently take for granted.
  • What you are calling “I” is itself a feeling that arises among the contents of consciousness. Consciousness is prior to it, a mere witness of it, and therefore, free of it in principle.
  • A wandering mind is an unhappy mind.
  • Real freedom must be coincident with normal waking life.
  • Consciousness is never truly confined by what it knows. That which is aware of sadness is not sad.

I’m very happy with the first half of the book that I read. I did not continue reading the book after the author said something controversial that made his credibility go out the window, for me. I doubt you’ll have the same experience, though.

Besides the fact, I’d still recommend this book to anyone who wants to practice mindfulness! Enjoy.

Like A Virgin

The book read: Like A Virgin by Richard Branson

Richard Branson is a highly liked and respected entrepreneur, who founded the Virgin Group, which is comprised of around 400 companies. These companies include Virgin Mobile, Virgin Airlines, and Virgin Records…to name a few.

The billionaire tells stories about his first business in high school and everything thereafter, and what drove him to be the person he is today. The book gives you tips on how to go out there and get what you want, and how to be a successful leader in a business. Great read, written by a very very successful human. Read this book & get like Mr. Branson!

My thoughts and questions:

  • Only a fool never changes his mind.
  • People are the key to success!
  • Be different & lead by listening.
  • Listen to your employees! They are the ones dealing with the business first-hand.
  • You can negotiate competitively without aggression. More determination. Be passionate!
  • Never be too proud to admit that you are wrong as a leader and always accept suggestions that are better than your own.
  • When it comes to helping a customer, the chain of assistance is only as strong as its weakest link.
  • Critical talk of others is a poor reflection on your own character.
  • Implement decisions quickly. Always be prepared, although, for what could go wrong. Protect the downside. If it’s not working, get out and move onto the next thing.
  • Be agile.
  • Have fun, be quirky, take everything less seriously.
  • It is far better to under-promise and over-deliver than vise versa.
  • Managers should constantly question the way people do things and encourage employees to do the same.
  • Intrapreneur: an employee who is given freedom and financial support to create new products, services, and systems, who does not have to follow the company’s usual routines or protocols.
  • Richard has invested in deep sea exploration, space exploration, going green in the air with bio-fuel, etc..
  • Always listen, seek advice from multiple sources…bounce ideas off all people, hear someone out before telling them others suggestions. By listening to others, your own thoughts may be persuaded for the better without knowing.
  • Look for app gaps! (areas/industries that apps don’t exist for yet)
  • 90% of success in life is just showing up.
  • More face to face contact helps communication.
  • Sustainable energy is the next gold rush!
  • In one hour, the earth receives more energy from the sun than is consumed by the whole of our society in one year!
  • When trying to sell investors – KISS: KEEP IT SIMPLE, STUPID.
  • Create clear, concise plans that investors can easily understand and repeat to their people.
  • What makes your product or service different? Will it improve the customer’s lives? Why would people buy/use it?
  • Overcoming adversity is the mark of a true entrepreneur.
  • The more actively and practically engaged you are in your business (or anything), the more successful you will feel.
  • Think big, build small.
  • INVEST IN YOUR EMPLOYEES!
  • He who resists can only lose.

Richard is extremely lighthearted about life and his businesses. He is always very different than the next, and finds ways to have fun creating a legacy. There is a lot to learn from him!

Thanks for reading, and I hope you enjoy, Like a Virgin!

Danke, Germany

I’m German. A lot of people from Wisconsin are. I was really excited to go there because it’s where I’m from! I wasn’t surprised when the landscape reminded me a lot of my home state, (besides the mountains of course).

We trained into Munich, Germany and walked from the train station to our hotel, Art Hotel Munich. This hotel is perfectly great and has a delicious complimentary breakfast.

Right off the bat we planned a day trip to Neuschwanstein Schloss (Castle). This is one of Walt Disney’s inspirations for Disney castles. If you’ve read my other posts, you know what Sandeman’s tours are. We took a Sandeman’s day tour to the castle for 37 euro, which is a great price. We took the train with the tour to the Bavarian Alps, where the castle is located. It cost an additional 12 euro to get into the castle…the tour lasted about 1 hour.

There is a really cool bridge you’ll see everyone funneling to, to get the view of the castle you see pictured above.

The woods around the castle are vast, and filled with cool little critters.

After we got back to Munich, we went to the Augustiner Brewery…a big beer hall with traditional picnic table type seating and band playing. We all had a mass of beer (liter) and the best food everrrr. I had pork with a huge schnitzel ball, warm red cabbage, and gravy. Obsessed.

germany8.jpg

It was pretty late after dinner, so we grabbed some Franziskaner (my favorite German beer) and went back to the hotel. We learned from the local store that the Franziskaner Brewery was right near there, but we never made it (I was sad about this).

The next day we did a bike tour called, Mike’s Bike Tours, that cost 21 euro. Since we were on bikes, I couldn’t photograph everything (or write down what everything was called), so checkout their website to see what it all includes. The tour starts in Marienplatz, which you should check out regardless.

The tour also took us to the massive green space in Munich called the English Garden, which also has a beer garden within it where we ate lunch and drank beer. The food was kick ass as well.

After the tour, we pretty much got on our train to the next destination – Prague!

Don’t forget to eat pretzels and brats, and drink lots of beer!

Switzerland Beauty

Have you ever been to heaven? I mean Switzerland? Seriously this place is unreal. SO green…nothing but lakes and mountains and pretty flowers. If you love nature and outdoor activities, Switzerland is for you.

We trained into Zurich, Switzerland and stayed at a hotel near the train station. We got into the city really late, so we went to sleep right away and planned to go to Lucerne, Switzerland the next day. Lucerne is home to a famous, beautiful bridge called Kapellbrucke, or Chapel Bridge, and Mt. Rigi.

If you go to Lucerne, you have to go to Mt. Rigi. To get there, you need to take a boat, and then take a cable car up the mountain. If you have a Eurail Pass (Europe train pass), you can use it to pay for the boat ride and get discounts off the cable car.

The cable car is about a 15 minute ride to the top…there are a few stops so make sure you are getting off at the correct one (the last one). Watch the times the car goes back down too…you don’t want to get stuck up there. Check out the views from the top of Mt. Rigi:

switz9switz10switz11switz12switz13switz14switz17

There were also tons of cows up there. They all wear bells, and we were told its solely for the beautiful sound it creates.

switz1.jpg
He loved me.

After we got back down from the mountain, we took the boat back to the main part of Lucerne (near the train station). There are tons of shops and restaurants (we ate at the Pfister) around there you can check out. Keep in mind that Switzerland uses the Frank, which is a high exchange rate to the American dollar…in other words, everything is really expensive. Expect to pay at least $20 for a meal if you eat out. I tried to get my meals from the grocery store.

The next day we decided to visit Zug, Switzerland. There happened to be a local bike race going on, so there were tons of people out and about in the usually small, quiet town. We ate breakfast at a cute creperie called, Cafe Intermezzo Zug, that was actually not expensive at all. Delicious, great find.  Like I said, Zug is a really small town. You can easily walk around the entire thing…there is a hill you can walk up on with a small garden and a great view of the town. If its warm out, you can rent paddle boards or kayaks and go out on the lake!

Pretty flowers!

The towns we visited in Switzerland were gorgeous and I would recommend them again and again. We didn’t spend hardly any time in Zurich, the big city, but if you get the chance you should.

You’ll never regret a trip to Switzerland! Thanks for reading 🙂

Venice, Italy

You’ll probably train into Venice, and when you get there you will fall in love…We all know how romantic Venice is supposed to be, and it truly is. Right out of the train station there are water taxis you can take. Take the public form of transportation they offer (yes its on the water, there are no cars in Venice). DO NOT take a private water taxi!!! They will charge you like $20 per person for a 5 minute ride (unless you’ve got money to blow).

Remember, Venice is made up of 118 little islands intersected by 150 canals and linked by 400 bridges…it’s way bigger than we assume.

venice10.jpg

We arrived at night, and went straight to our Air B&B. If you are traveling with a lot of people, it is almost worth it to split hotel rooms or Air B&B’s rather than hostels.

After we got settled in, we took a stroll and went out for a late dinner. There are amazing restaurants everywhere, you won’t be disappointed with what you pick.

venice 2.jpg
From our evening stroll

The next day, it was really really hot. We did some sight-seeing, but also spent a lot of time eating and drinking, to get out of the sun.

Piazza San Marco is right near the water, and is the main square in Venice. Apparently it’s just as amazing at night. If you’re looking for a great restaurant, venture a little further off the path of the main square. You’ll find more authenticity.

Right next to the main square is the Correr Museum. It has amazing architecture and paintings inside.

Go to the Bridge of Sigh’s. It is an old prison, and the prisoners would walk over the bridge and get their last glimpse of outside life.

As I mentioned, Venice is made up of multiple islands. We went to Murano, which is famous for its glass blowing. They also have a canal filled with vibrant, colorful houses (we never found it).

We also took a gondola ride. Honestly, it’s not worth it (again, unless you have money to blow). It only lasts about 30 minutes and its about $25 per person. It was still really pretty though.

Venice is truly peaceful and charming! Spend some time there, I didn’t get to see enough.

Thanks for reading and I hope you make it to Venice!!!

O Roma

Romeeee. Rome is easily one of my favorite cities in Europe, because of all the spectacular history there.

Where to stay?

I stayed at the Wesley Bed & Breakfast. It was really really nice and in a great area.

We arrived at night, and had the entire next day to explore. I was traveling with 7 people at this point…I decided I needed a break from everyone and took on Rome alone.

To get around, use a map. Every major city in Europe provides a great map showing the highly visited destinations. I got around on foot, and saw just about everything on the map. If you don’t want to walk, take the train!roma3.jpg

After my long day of walking and sight-seeing…I went out for a nice dinner, solo.

The waiter was obviously Italian, and insisted on teaching me some Italian, and feeding me free booze all night. (Hitting on me much? lol) It was still fun, and I got a photo out of it. I had pesto gnocchi…it was to die for.

The next day I joined back up with everyone and we went to the Vatican. GET YOUR TICKETS AHEAD OF TIME! Like a long time in advance…that shit books up real quick. You will not want to wait in the line to get in. The Vatican is home to the famous Sistine Chapel, although you are not allowed to photograph it.

Like I said, friends…Rome was vast and stunning. You could easily spend a few days there exploring everything.

I actually walked around half the day with a mini bottle of wine in my hand…I’m pretty sure you can drink in public…Don’t forget to indulge in pizza, pasta, wine and gelato!!!

Florence – Cinque Terre, Italy

Let’s start with a picture because it’s just so gorgeous =)

cinque1.jpg
Riomaggiore

Cinque Terre is a portion of the Italian Riviera. It consists of five major villages (Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore) that are filled with colorful and quaint houses like pictured above. Because it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, people are not allowed to change the color of their homes. These homes are owned mostly by Italians passed down through the generations. If one does go up for sale, it’ll come with a hefty price tag.

Back tracking a bit…I took a day trip from Florence, Italy to Cinque Terre. I hardly spent any time in Florence, so I only have a few solid recommendations. They have tons of high end shopping, if that’s your cup of tea. Otherwise, go to Piazzale Michelangelo at night, it has an amazing view of the city. Bring wine & snacks.

florence1.jpg
View from Piazzale Michelangelo

See the main 3 buildings that are lit up? You should visit them! The building with the dome is called Duomo – Cathedral of Santa Maria dei Fiore and is located near Piazza della Signoria, which accompanies the far left lit building.  At either location you can buy tickets to get into all 3 buildings.

Along the main river in Florence is an arch stone bridge called Ponte Vecchio, famous for the shops inside it.

Check out the top 10 ten things to do in Florence.

Okay, back to Cinque Terre. There are multiple day trips you can find that will take you there from Florence. We got on a bus from the train station, and had a guide with us the whole way.

On arrival in Corniglia, I was stunned! It’s beauty is undeniable. There were grape vines, artichoke plants, lemon and peach trees, caper bushes, lizards, butterflies, tadpoles, and flowers everywhere that smelled unbelievably vast. Oh, and the water is SO clear!

After exploring for a bit in Corniglia, we had lunch (included with the tour) at a seafood restaurant and were served assorted fresh seafood and pesto pasta with potatoes and green beans…it was SO good! There are tons of amazing restaurants all over the coast.

After lunched we hiked over to the next village. You can hike between all 5, or train. We arrived in Vernazza and went for a swim! The water was filled with star fish, colorful fish, sea urchin, snails and more.

Vernazza has some really cute shops and restaurants…they apparently are known for their gelato as well. Get it at Gelateria Stalin, right inside the bay pictured above.

We then took a train from Vernazza to Manarola. There we hiked up to a cemetery for a good view…it was kinda creepy.

We then got on a boat to go to the next village, Monterosso. We hung out on the beach for a bit.

Change is Growth

The book read: The New New Thing by Michael Lewis

This book is about the life of billionaire Jim Clark, a Silicon Valley entrepreneur and overall interesting character. Learn about how Jim paved the way for the tech world, all of his inventions and companies, and how he still had fun doing it. Michael Lewis follows the once owner of Silicon Graphics and Netscape around and documents his life.

To give you a sneak peak friends…this guy made the first internet browser happen (Netscape). He  invented the smart TV. When you go to the doctor and they already know all your personal and insurance info and bill the insurance company…he made that happen. He’s kind of a big deal.

My thoughts:

  • “Silicon Valley to the USA is what the USA is to the rest of the world.”
  • Engineers rule the US economy.
  • Growth is just another worth for change.
  • All people are given the same ingredients…it’s what you make of them.
  • Concepts are recipes.
  • For a company to succeed, it always has to be looking to destroy itself, if it didn’t, someone else would.
  • Technology exists long before it’s worked into society. Human growth is much slower than that of technology, and we take much longer to adapt. Ex. The smart TV existed and piloted in the early 90’s but no one saw a use for it. Today they are “new” and cool.
  • The only way to preserve your situation in valley life was to create a monopoly…Microsoft.
  • True success..for me..is when there is no real distinction between work and play.
  • You make money by changing the world.
  • Jim’s outsiderliness is what gave him his unusual view of the world. He could see human society in ways that most businessmen could not, because he was not very much a part of the business world.
  • If you’re going to do anything worth doing, you’ll need a group of committed people.
  • Be smart enough to know when not to trust yourself.
  • Clark said that Netscape made anarchy respectable.
  • Wealth generation is suppressed by those who are supposedly most interested in wealth.
  • Changes in technology are not simple matters. Often they change the way people interact with their surroundings, and with each other.
  • In order to keep investors interested (your stock price rising) you have to remain in a state of pure possibility. The minute investors understand what you are doing, they will hold you in a lower estimation.
  • There are more conceivable possibilities than realized outcomes…the world as we know if is a result of a long string of chance outcomes. – Paul Romer

Jim Clark was a true idea man and a so-so businessman. He had a group of dedicated people who turned his ideas into real life. Although he was a brilliant computer engineer as well, he truly loved creating ideas and letting others help them come to life.

Think and Grow Rich

The book read: Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill

This book is a true guide to help you frame your thinking in a way to make you successful – whatever your idea of success may be. It teaches you how to acquire a burning desire for whatever it is you want in life, and how to go get it.

This book is very inspirational, and I think anyone and everyone should dabble into it! Learn to be a better you.

My thoughts:

  • What you say is much less significant than what you think. If you have a burning desire for whatever you want, your thoughts will convey your feelings.
  • Determination. Never give up on what you want. The greatest struggle will come right before success.
  • Eye contact and persistence are extremely important!
  • Think success. Think you are great. Think and know you can succeed. Know what you want. It’s all you need!
  • Nothing is impossible, be success conscious.
  • Henry Ford asked his engineers to complete an 8 cylinder gas block engine in one piece. They said it was impossible. He said try anyway until you figure it out. Eventually they did figure it out – true determination.
  • Design something that everyone can use.
  • Devote all of your energy to fulfilling your dreams.
  • Adapt your life to your positive and success thoughts…let them influence you.
  • You need a definite desire and hold onto it in your thoughts until it is an obsession, plan definite means and ways to acquire riches, which does not recognize failure, and your goal with become a fact. There are NO other options. Win or perish.
  • You need a definiteness of purpose!
  • Success requires no apologies, failure permits no alibis.
  • Every failure brings with it the seed of an equivalent success.
  • Set definite goals. Imagine yourself successful. Reflect on past successes. LOVE YOURSELF!
  • All thoughts which have been emotionalized (given feeling) and mixed with faith begin immediately to translate into their physical equivalent or counterpart. HAVE FAITH.
  • Give before you expect to get.
  • There are no limitations to the mind except those we acknowledge!!!
  • The subconscious mind acts only upon thoughts that have been well mixed with emotion or feeling.
  • Knowledge only becomes power when, and if, it is organized into definite plans of action and directed to a definite end.
  • Form a master mind group, a team. People should work in harmony. People need compensation for their work. Not necessarily money. Quitters are never winners and winners never quit.
  • Courtesy, service. The employer is the public, fail to serve well and lose the privilege of serving.
  • Analyze yourself. Know your strengths so you can market them.
  • Capitalists provide service, without which there would be no civilization.
  • Make decisions promptly and change them slowly, if and when they change.
  • If you are influenced by opinions of others, you will have no desire of your own.
  • Genuine wisdom is usually conspicuous through modesty and silence.
  • Power is organized and intelligently directed knowledge.
  • The emotion of sex is the most intense and powerful of all mind stimuli. Transmute this energy into other areas.
  • Use sex desires. Transform them into creative imagination. Sex and love together in harmony is unstoppable.
  • The subconscious mind acts first on dominating desires that have been mixed with an emotional feeling, such as faith.
  • The subconscious mind is the medium between the thinking mind and infinite intelligence.
  • Thought is energy traveling at an exceedingly high rate of vibration. Thought which has been modified or “stepped up” by any of the major emotions vibrates at a much higher rate than ordinary thought. It is this type of thought that passes from one brain to another.
  • The subconscious mind = sender. The creative mind = receiver. Use auto suggestion to communicate between thyself.

Train your mind to allow it to think how YOU WANT IT TO. Don’t let your thoughts control you. You can truly do whatever you put your mind to…don’t give up your burning desire!
